Before the development of the Roman Catholic Church, there were many individual churches that recognized only Jesus as the head of their church.

The Roman Catholic church was formed by a split between Rome and Constantinople in 1059 AD. The year of the split was the end of many years of unbiblical maneuvering for control of Christendom.
